When it comes to conceptualization, Kenzo takes the cake every season—remember Kenzo x H&M? Their collaborations and campaigns always seem to be winners with the masses and veterans, and this time, for their Spring-Summer 2017 campaign, the French label hasn’t left any stones unturned. It features Golden Globe winner and Black-ish lead Tracee Ellis Ross, Grey’s Anatomy hottie Jesse Williams, and musician Kelsey Lu, who was last seen on Solange’s album A Seat At the Table. A casting coupe you didn’t see coming, right?
Shot by photographers Jalan and Jibril Durimel, this print campaign will be followed up with a short film “Music is My Mistress,” courtesy Kahlil Joseph. Wondering why you should look out for it? Well, Joseph was also the creative lead for the acclaimed Lemonade album by Beyonce… so, there’s that! Now, the film will only be released on 20th February but until then, the campaign shots are causing quite a stir, especially since they’ve been timed perfectly with Black History Month.
Not just the lead trio, but even the creative geniuses behind this campaign are all African-American. Kenzo, we’d truly like to thank you for this genius stroke; it’s definitely hit home!
The Kenzo SS17 Collection
Expect to see a lot of androgyny in the women’s collection with exaggerated shoulders, oversized collars and military-style detailing.
The juxtaposition of solids against stripes, patterns, prints, and graphics create unique contradictions. The whole look and feel is that of a warrior clan decked in armor with both Tracee and Kelsey flaunting their natural hair, or styled in braids. Even the accessories run the same tempo. Coiled heels and earrings play the perfect match for box bags with tassels and scarves that are knotted for effect.
The colour palette is dominantly black, blue and white, with gold, olive, and silver added to the womenswear line. Jesse Williams represents the millennial man in smart casuals as he wears the famous bomber-style jacket and cut-off pants in our favourite shot. Another has him in a nautical stripes T-shirt and blazer, with loafers to match the carefree stylings.
All in all, Kenzo’s eccentric vibe continues right through the campaign. It boasts of vintage aesthetics combined with a modern sentiment.
