Easily one of the most high-profile events in the world, the 70th Cannes Film Festival was all about the movies, and yes, the red carpet fashion. This and the MET Gala are two affairs where designers pull out all the stops to dress celebrities in their most creative creations.
We’re revisiting the South of France for a quick recap of the celebrities who gave us fashion goals for 2017.
Elle Fanning tops the list when it comes to slaying it on every occasion at Cannes 2017. Our favourites though, are the vintage pale green soft tulle deep V-neck gown by Gucci, and her Christian Haute Couture dress decked with feathers and florals.
Only Kendall Jenner could pull off denim cut-off shorts and a black crop on the red carpet, but one-upping her own Alexandre Vauthier ensemble was the model’s Giambattista Valli Couture gown complete with a long flowing train and all.
As always, walking on the red carpet like a queen, Rihanna looked fierce in her white Dior gown paired with custom sunglasses by Andy Wolf Eyewear—because she can! Her cape-like jacket added the right amount of drama, and all that bling by Chopard (cuffs, earrings, rings) was very gangsta.
Every year, there’s always that one dress that’s straight out of a fairytale and this year it belonged to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Creating a Cinderella moment on the red carpet with a blue Michael Cinco gown, it took four people just to get the actress out of the car, what with all that voluminous going on down there.
Thank god it wasn’t another catsuit; we were mighty pleased with the vision of Bella Hadid in this elegant Alexandre Vauthier gown. The only thing that managed to outshine the model’s strapless dress was that whopping 180 carat sapphire necklace by Bulgari which had us picking our jaws off the floor.
A class apart, Uma Thurman’s Atelier Versace gown cut an hourglass figure with its pleats and folds. The off-shoulder, the ruffles, the thigh-high split, the minimal accessories were all very on trend.
It was the colour that did it for us with Deepika Padukone’s dress. The one-shoulder Brandon Maxwell gown elongated her already tall and slender frame, and the Chloe Gosselin stilettos only helped further the case. Add to that the dramatic green winged eyeliner and top knot bun, this one was a lesson in how the right styling can elevate a look.
This Dior dress takes years off Nicole Kidman with its playful silhouette—a flared tea-length skirt, straps tied on the arms, and the blue and green colour palette. Leaving her hair casual and loose and keeping her makeup fresh was a stroke of genius.
