It’s a routine, quite literally. You cleanse, you moisturise. But, does your skin feel really tight if you put off moisturising for 10 minutes, say, just in case you got busy?
That’s a red flag. With all the fancy cleansing gels, foaming face washes, and on-the-go wipes, we’re picking up the ‘organic’ looking, pretty labelled, and expensive cleansers just because we perceive them as special.
Our skin produces natural oils and the wrong cleanser can strip these, leaving it looking grey and flaky, and prone to ageing, and enlarged pores. Now, unfortunately, we quickly compensate by over moisturising to fix the over drying, and that’s how we get caught in the vicious cycle where we ignore the culprit’s that’s right there in front of us. Truth is, some of the biggest brands don’t even make it to the list of pH-balancing cleansers that prevent your skin from drying out.
Simply Put, pH Scale Is…
…nothing but the measure of acidity and alkalinity which ranges from zero (extremely acidic) to 14 (extremely alkaline). Our skin should lie around number 5 on the pH scale in order to produce natural oils to keep it healthy without clogging the pores and trapping dirt. In this sweet spot, the cell turnover is good, the skin naturally self-exfoliates, deflects UV rays, and ages at the correct pace.
Now, the wrong cleansers make your skin more alkaline. This causes dry patches, itching, skin peeling, redness, and sometimes even rashes. What’s worse, it takes hours for the skin to recalibrate the oil loss, and in fact, your pores sometimes begin to produce sebum (oil) in excess to (over) compensate. And just as the skin begins to come back to normalcy, you wash your face with the harsh cleanser, again! (At least twice a day, right?) You wouldn’t need to lap up on palms full of moisturiser if you just used the right cleanser.
