We caught up with the beautiful Lorna Burford, the creative mind behind Raindrops of Sapphire and The Jeans Blog. Taking a sneak peek into her life as a full time fashion blogger and getting some valuable advice on the way.
What was the inspiration behind starting Raindrops of Sapphire?
I started it back in 2010 as a place to share my thoughts and feelings on things with other like minded people. I wanted my own space, so Raindrops of Sapphire was created. I never intended for it to be what it is now, but after a lot of hard work, it’s definitely grown into a wonderful community.
What are your 5 must have fashion items?
For me it’s always a great pair of skinny jeans, a fitted blazer, a cross body bag, some ankle boots, and a structured coat.
3 things we would never see British women wear?
Bikinis in the street (weather is not appropriate), roller skates and denim shorts… I can’t think of anymore as British women are generally very open with their style. It’s an eclectic mix.
How did your love affair with Denim start?
I’ve loved denim for as long as I can remember, even when I was little, but I remember it starting in about 2004 when I started falling in love with premium denim and got obsessed with Rock & Republic, namely the crowns on the back pockets from Victoria Beckham. It opened up a crazy obsession.
Why do you think so many women are lost when it comes to shopping for denims?
I think because of the overwhelming amount of cuts, fabrics, blends, washes, styles etc on the market. There’s so many and it can be daunting trying to figure out what works best for your body shape, what blends of cotton are best, what style of pockets look best on you etc. There’s so much choice.
Do you have a power piece or a lucky item that you always wear for important meetings?
I don’t have one piece in particular, but I think feeling confident and looking your best is extremely important. If you feel good in what you’re wearing, you carry yourself with more confidence and strength, so always choose an outfit which feels powerful.
Brands and Designers that you usually shop from?
Most recently, I’ve been addicted to Gucci. I’m obsessing over them right now. Other designers I love are Céline, Chanel and Louis Vuitton for bags, as well as Balenciaga, but I adore Citizens of Humanity, AGOLDE, PAIGE etc for denim, and more high street brands like Reiss, AllSaints and Topshop for clothing.
Do you follow trends? What according to you is the hottest trend for 2017?
In my industry, I’m always following the latest denim trends (that’s cropped flared jeans, vintage fits, and patched denim), but for actual clothing, sheer, lacy pieces are extremely popular right now, as are the rope chokers around the neck.
Do you follow the work of other bloggers? Name some bloggers that you personally like?
Absolutely! I have a huge amount of bloggers that I follow. I’m always about supporting your fellow bloggers. I follow on a regular basis: Mariannan, Cupcakes & Cashmere, Brooklyn Blonde etc.
What advice would you like to give to someone who wants to became a fashion blogger?
I actually did a post on this a while ago (here: http://raindropsofsapphire.com/2016/06/25/why-do-you-want-to-start-a-blog/) and I think the most important facts are that you need to be aware how much hard work goes into it, it’s a 24/7 job, it can be critical and stressful, and it takes a lot of time to build up your reputation. Don’t get into it for the free stuff only, it will be destined to fail.
