As we gear up for Fashion Week month waiting with bated breath to see what’s going to be on trend in SS18, there’s still the third quarter of 2017 on our hands. And with the last four months come the big results, the trend reports, the verdicts on what was hot and what was not in 2017.
And that’s what brings us to the handbag edition. Some old favourites got a much needed 2017 makeover—yes, teeny tiny handbags, we’re looking at you—while other trending handbags proved to be a happy surprise with their unique shapes and hardware. So let’s take a look at that the five handbag styles that were, and still are, all the rage in 2017.
The ’70s and ’80s era made a comeback this year complete with mustard hues, fringe embellishments, and all things metallic. Now, you can choose to interpret this as less of a throwback and more of a futuristic trend. Either way, the metallic handbag ranks high in the lineup of must-haves for 2017.
Metallic bucket bags were all over the Marc Jacobs catwalk in stand-out blues and golds to really get you noticed. Louis Vuitton, Mulberry, and Kenzo also presented their own spin on this handbag trend with many covetable pieces.
You can alternatively opt for a metallic clutch to add some glamour to your night-out ensemble. Amber Le Bon, Kendall Jenner, Jennifer Lopez and even Rihanna have been spotted with this accessory. Convinced?
The Basket Bag
Do you feel like you’re channelling Dorothy from Wizard of Oz or heading out for a fun summer picnic whenever you see a wicker basket? That might have been the case pre-SS17, but post-SS17, all we can think of are basket bags by Charlotte Olympia, Tory Burch, and Dolce and Gabbana. These designers have revolutionised the picnic basket and we couldn’t be more grateful because wicker bags and picnic baskets are one of the most feel-good accessories of the season.
Not only do they look stunning, they also score high on functionality. Basket bags won’t get scratched, discoloured, lose their form or shape, and are perhaps the most durable style in handbags that’s great day-to-night wear, shopping and chores included.
The handbag style reminiscent of Jane Birkin and Brigette Bardot is all over Instagram with some of the biggest fashion bloggers using it to make a style statement. To seal the deal, Beyoncé is a fan of the trend and that’s really all you need to know!
Teeny Tiny Handbags
Often referred to as Thumbelina purses—and with good reason—teeny tiny handbags are back in style. While it may be bad news for those of us who like to carry their world around with them, this dainty handbag style is perfect for dinner parties, cocktails, and formal events. We also love taking our miniatures out to dinner dates where only a credit card, phone, and lip gloss are needed.
On a side note, crossbody Thumbelina bags are just what you need when a big shopping trip is on the cards because, those shopping bags aren’t going to carry themselves, you know.
Teen tiny bags first cropped up on the Valentino, Coach and Louis Vuitton SS17 catwalks, and we imagine they will be occupying many more showcases to come.
Jessica Alba and Gigi Hadid are just two of many famous faces who have ditched their token large bags in favour of smaller and more convenient ones.
Adding cute key chains, attachments, and embellishments to your handbag is so eighth grade/Paris Hilton, but we’re here to tell you that it’s now not only a “trend” but a “hot trend” at that.
Rebecca Minkoff added fur balls to her bags while Fendi gave us fuzzy pom-poms. Maison Margiela piled on the sparkle, and things got extremely fruity over at Altuzarra. All in all, there was no shortage of options and this is one trend that you can bag for really cheap.
Just add some chunky charms and danglers to your existing purse and you’re good to go. Feeling more playful? Slap on some stick-on embellishments like diamantes on a plain black tote.
Bum bags, fanny packs, waist bags, whatever you want to call them… they’re back. Designers really went all out to ensure that the fanny pack got a modern update, which is why we think they might be in it for the long haul.
DKNY and Kenzo made their offerings current and futuristic, while Stella McCartney eased her followers into the trend slowly by making her version almost resemble a belt (a belt she would love for you to wear this year).
Celebs such as Kendall Jenner, Kate Hudson, and Kate Bosworth have all been spotted rocking a fanny pack while going about their day-to-day lives. They’re perfect for festivals, music gigs, airports, or any other place when you want to keep your personal belongings close and your hands completely free.
