If he’s put a ring on it and you’re out and about trying to frantically find THE wedding dress of your dreams, stop! You need this intervention. Bridal fashion has evolved beyond the pages of your wedding book, circa 2005. It’s departed from poufy ball gowns matched with sparkling tiaras and the blush-inducing ‘power shoulder’ looks of the 80s—so much has changed, and, it’s definitely for the better.
Not just white and Cinderella-like, the modern bride is being counseled by top fashion magazines, leading designers, and celebrity weddings to push the envelope and walk down the aisle in what best represents her personal style. And, yes, if that means a blush asymmetrical dress, a black tailored gown, a sequined jumpsuit, or a bohemian lace maxi, then so be it.
With ‘theme’ and ‘destination’ weddings came alternative gowns that allowed the bride to express herself beyond layers of tulle, net, and can-can skirts. Celebrities, too, had a big role to play in the style musings of the 2017 bride.
Look to Bianca Jagger’s sharp pantsuit from her wedding as an iconic example. And then there was British model Poppy Delevingne who decided to wear Emilio Pucci florals down the aisle, while Keira Knightley’s Chanel party dress was young, fun, and very new-age fairy tale.

A-listers like Olivia Palermo went a step further. Palermo looked stunning in a cashmere sweater, lace skirt, and short shorts by Carolina Herrera on her wedding day. Gwen Stefani, Kaley Cuoco, and Julianne Moore all wore shades of pink, but our favourite was 90210 star Shenae Grimes’ black Vera Wang gown that made us root for the flipside of the wedding colour palette.
And on that note, we take you through wedding dress and bridal trends that every 2017 bride should make note of if she wishes to stand out.
White Is Not The Colour That’s Walking Down The Aisle
Roberto Cavalli Embellished Printed Plisse Silk Gown, £2005
Maticevski Vanquished Ruffled Gown, £3204
Yes, a black ruffled gown, or one that’s pleated to an A-line seem to be favourites. And if that feels too vampish, try a printed black wedding gown with feminine details. The colour is instantly slimming (Wedding dress goals: check!) with a sensual appeal, and you don’t need a different dress for the reception party.
Jay Ahr, Rope Detail Dress, £1069
If you’ve got a fun, free-spirited and laidback nature which makes you gravitate towards simple stuff, you’ve probably been dreaming of the perfect Haute hippie wedding. A wedding gown that’s easy, flowy and Coachella-approved will call out to you and fit right in at that rustic backyard-style celebration that will be all over Pinterest.
Valentino, Embellished Tulle Gown, £13,285
Tory Burch Cutout Jacquard Gown, £442.70
Unconventional to the point of being non-conformist about most things, if you’d rather jump from a building than wear another white dress, then you’ll be happy to know that rose pink and blue are on the colour palette of the 2017 bride. You can go formal with a gold overlay on a blush dress, or keep it more understated with a cut-out maxi.
Bridal Dresses 2.0
Boohoo Afua Choker Lace Detail Skater Dress, £18
Boohoo Alessia Lace Top Strappy Skater Dress, £10
Do it like Kiara Knightley with a party dress that’s got all the drama, embellishments, net and lace details of the wedding gown, but comes in a trimmed down silhouette that’s fun and flirty. White, black, and champagne gold are your best colour options and yes, feel free to wear a wreath-style tiara with this one. It’s all very English and princess-like.
Not Just diamonds…
Pearl drop pendant necklace, £85
Swarovski Crystal Plated Necklace, £660
Try some vintage accessories with gemstones like emeralds, or maybe even pearls to add a pop of colour to your ensemble.
A beaded loop bracelet like this one from Swarovski will be perfect for the rocker chic bride who wants a wedding dress featuring a leather corset and a full net skirt. Another option is the emerald green loop bangle by Swarovski that will add that extra edge to her wedding ensemble.
The 2017 Versions Of Glass Slippers
Chiara Ferragni Eye & Lips Glitter Loafers, £238
Zoe Lee Ferriday Lizard Embossed Leather Loafer, £195
Let’s get real. Wearing stilettos under your wedding dress has always been impractical and of no use, since no one can really see your shoes under the full-length dress. Keep the sequins and the mirror effect intact with loafers that are cheeky and pretty, all at the same time.
Loriblu Golden Satin and Jewel Bootie, £894.60
Balenciaga Feather Embellished Satin Pumps, £995
And if you’re the kind of bride who just prefers heels, step out in shoes that go beyond glass slippers; fast-forward to the fairytale of 2017, and the bride’s got her pretty ankle boots or a dramatic pair of pumps on for size.
